What to Wear?

Whenever someone books a session, I usually hear... "What should we wear?" My standard line is wear something you feel great in, wear a color that is flattering to you and coordinate - don't match.

But let's face it, we are all pretty visual people! So I've come up with a way showcase some sample outfits and post them here on my blog. I'll try to post at least one a week. No need to be exact, but hopefully these ideas will give you a starting point when shopping for that perfect outfit!

And I think this daddy is going to have the best Father's Day gift ever! I had the opportunity to photograph this amazing set of sisters yesterday and what a hoot they were! I just loved every minute of it, especially when "G" tried to pick me up at the end. I mistook her mighty power for a big hug, but I think if she grows just a little more, she might succeed next time I see her! And little Miss "M" was just so funny. I can see her and my Kelsey would have a lot in common. Always going for the laugh, which is a wonderful trait to have. And baby "E"... Oh my aching heart, she was a sweet peanut and could sing better than any 18 month old I've ever witnessed!

Truly happy children make my job a daily joy. Thank you for coming over to play today!

I just love missing teeth. As a mom, I know this picture is not always possible, so as a photographer I jump at the chance to capture it!

Models will receive a complimentary session, involving a new set design similar to the images shown below, and a complimentary 8x10 OR (2) 5x7’s (parent’s choice). Parents of the models must sign a model release for their child, allowing them to be featured on my website, blog and other advertising avenues (your names will not be associated with your images for privacy reasons).

She is the kind of baby that makes me want to have more babies. And well... since I've already been there and done that, she is the kind of baby that makes me L.O.V.E. my career choice! I'm just lucky, that's all there is to say about it. They come, we play, they smile and coo, they find their own little special place in my heart and then when they get all tuckered out, I send them home. LOL

My new favorite thing - just in time for the holidays!

I'm all about doing my little part for planet Earth, but I'll be the first to admit we aren't totally green here in the Edwards household. It has to be easy, you know? So way back when Wal-Mart started offering those reusable bags for $1 I bought like 6 of them. NEVER USE THEM! Do you know why? Because they are always somewhere else when I need them.

Well this summer at DisneyLand, I happened to purchase a cute little reusable tote bag with my friend Mickey Mouse on it. It rolls up into it's own little pouch and I carry it with me in my purse. You would NOT believe how much I use that thing! Do you know why??? Because it's ALWAYS right THERE!

Well, not heading back to DisneyLand anytime soon, I was on a quest to find some bags that are truly portable. I happened upon these on Facebook and immediately fell in love!

Go to their site at http://www.rumebags.com/ and check out the little animated demo on the right side of the home page. They just roll right up into their own little straps, not even a pouch. I bought 4 sets... some for me and some for gifts. Shhhh... don't tell.

What a FUN session I had with this family! I just love it when people get really creative with their holiday cards. Creating (and receiving) really fun cards are some of my favorite parts of the holidays!

This sneak peek is just to let mom breathe a little easier. Little Sister didn't really enjoy the process of having her picture taken but we kept at it, pulling out all the stops. Mom, you did GREAT! A nice big sneak peek for the "K" family because quite honestly I couldn't decide what to show them. I wanted to show all of them, but that would be a little much, don't you think? This was at a new location for me and it was B.E.A.U.T.I.F.U.L.! Unfortunately (for me) it is on private property or I would be there all the time!

I just love this image. It's so peaceful and full of connection and the trees look like they are protecting them.

I always love to see how babies grow and this sweet thing is no exception! "D" and her family came to me this weekend for her 6 month pictures and she is just such a sweet little peanut, always full of smiles. And those big blue eyes... they just melt my heart.

What a happy family! I also love this in color and almost posted both because I couldn't make up my mind. But in the end decided to sneak peek this one for no real particular reason other than b/w is so classic. I love how daddy is looking so lovingly and happily at his daughter.

I had the true honor of seeing Baby "C" before she even made a stop at home from the hospital! Truly it is an honor to be asked to be part of a family's life like this, it is humbling and terrific and sometimes makes me get a little teary with happiness. :)

Of course she was wonderful in every way, from her sweet baby hair to her perfect baby toes.

M and S, I hope you made it home safely and got to take a nice long nap upon your arrival. She is precious and I thank you from the bottom of my heart for sharing her with me.

1. I am a collegiate athlete. I played golf for Wayne State College in Wayne, NE. What is special about that is I never played on any kind of golf team prior to college. We did not have high school golf where I grew up and the only coach I ever had was my dad. On that same note, I was the first person from my high school to play any sport for a Division II college.

2. You can type my last name on a standard keyboard using only your left hand.

3. I spent my entire 5th grade year spelling my name with an "i", like Becki. It never stuck. I'm actually happy about that now. LOL

4. I nearly cut my entire right hand off on July 20, 1987 in a "farming accident". It was my first day of walking beans for my friend's dad. I had been working for almost 2 full hours before it happened. That's the only farm work I've ever done in my life. Thankfully for Dr. Cimpl, I still have my hand and all of it's uses. I was doing this work to earn money to buy a $60 jean jacket my parents would not buy for me. My Grandma Edith brought the jacket to me in the hospital, even though I had only earned $8 that day. It was the most expensive jean jacket I've ever owned. :)

5. I am allergic to Penicillin.

6. I met my husband at a wedding.

7. I have never went camping, not even in my backyard.

Little Boy Blue

Little Baby K was quite possibly the most mellow, easy going baby I've ever laid eyes on. He let us do just about anything we wanted and never made a peep! Plus he stayed awake almost the whole time and showed us his big bright eyes! It was pure joy to get to work with him and his mommy.

My newly renovated office! Come peek!

You know how it is... I know you do...after you are done with a really cool home improvement you just want everyone to come look at it with you!

Well, this is home AND work related, since it was my office that got renovated! Yeah for me! I now have this most amazing, comfortable and calming space just for me and my creativity to hang out together. And look, pictures of my own kids hanging in my office! Now I can see their cuteness even when they are at school.

For anyone wondering what it looked like before, I'm sorry, I will absolutely NOT post any before pictures. If you were unfortunate enough to see the "before" in person, I apologize profusely. We are going to pretend that the before never actually happened and all evidence of it was destroyed. LOL

No traveling required... these are done just 10 minutes West of Omaha!

Monday through Wednesday evenings only now through Oct 10th. All beach sessions are scheduled about 1 1/2 hours before sunset. Availability for beach sessions is limited.

Wow, where did July go? All I know is I feel like I've been running and running and running, always out the door. I guess there are a few days left, huh?

Let's see here, the weekend after we saw the Olympic Trials (which sadly was my last blog post...) Jill's softball team played AND WON the 10 & U state championship! Woo!

(here are the winners, complete with their trophy and some VERY cool black eye stuff - Jill is 4th from the left in the backrow)

Then of course after I won the state championship.. I mean we won... oh... I mean THEY won, we had to endure countless celebrations! I believe we are officially up to three championship parties now, with at least one more in the works. LOL But hey, what fun is winning if you can't celebrate it! All I know is it may be just as fun to have your daughter win something big than it is to win it yourself. I'm definitely not too proud to ride her coattails from time to time.

So that's what' we've been up to these last 2 weeks. Sorry for the lack of blogging, but really... how can I be expected to blog when I'm out celebrating. :)

School starts back up in 25 days and we still have two vacations to take. Nothing like packing a summer full of fun!

I'm a big fan of the Olympics. Always have been, probably always will be. I just love it, love the passion the athletes have, love thinking about how they probably "came up through the ranks" to shine as a super athlete. I love their life stories, some of them normal some of them truly inspiring (Like Bode Miller - skier to name just one). I can remember clearly in 1996 when Kerri Strug landed on her broken ankle to win the event - what a moment! I was sitting in my sparsly furnished 1 bedroom apartment, glued to the tv that night. And as we sat and watch a sport I've never actually witnessed in person last week, I found myself crying more than once at what an accomplishment winning a spot on the team must have been for some of these people and their families. And now that I'm a little older with kids of my own, I can only imagine the pride a parent must feel when their child takes the medal stand.

All of these pictures were taken with a little point and shoot camera, so far from even good quality. LOL We were four rows from the water and really close to the medal stand. The pictures are terribly dark and grainy and with a p&s zoom this was as much detail as I could get. Kind of disappointing to me, but it's better than nothing. And Jill's already inspired to make several scrapbook pages out of the event. LOL

Well... okay, that might be a stretch, but here's how it really went.

Yutan 10 & U vs. Ashland
June 18th, game time 6pm
Also happens to be Kelsey's 9th birthday
Going into the top of the 5th (and final) inning score is tied at zero.
Yutan's amazing defense is down and ready.
Ashland hits one over their heads for an in-field homer.
Another runner gets on base advances to third - she comes home 2 batters later.

Yutan stops the bleeding at 2 runs.
Coach Nikki gives an inspiring speech to the Yutan hitters.
Noelle hits an AMAZING in-field homer and really gets our bats moving.
A couple more girls on the bases and another girl comes home.

Score tied 2-2 bottom of the 5th with 1 out. Bases are loaded.

Kelsey steps in the batters box with some birthday determination. This is what she looks like in case you forgot. Only she looked a little bigger and meaner staring down Ashland's pitcher.

The Ashland coach, in a competitve move, brings all nine players into the in-field... What's THAT all about.... Apparently legal in 10 & U Rec ball, but soon to find out... not a good move.

A sneak peek for this family that wanted a bit of everything! We started with some fabulous garage light studio work - yes, it was really in my garage! Freshly cleaned, compliments of my wonderful husband, Tom.

Check out these pools of light called eyes. They look like emeralds or some crazy ocean water off the coast of some wonderful private island.

Then we moved the party to a nearby state park, where we frolicked... in the mosquito haven. Good thing we had some "off" in the van. I don't think that stuff works on me. I must have some crazy chemical make up that bugs find irresistable.

I will say though that this first moment was completely unstaged. They were just doing their thang and being super cute! I adore this image! It screams happy childhood!

And don't you just love the look on big sister's face? I mean, that is total joy right there. And totally real. Pretty little girl, with her pretty dress, digging in the dirt with her brothers. This one just makes me happy!

Yep! It's that time of year again! Time for the Edwards kids' yearly birthday portrait session! Now... I love it, I really do. But when I have a specific idea in my head and that involves carting several pieces of lighting equipment with me to a new location, getting everyone ready by 9:30am (we're not all morning people here), taking a babysitter and a friend with me (hey, I need moral support too sometimes) and trying to keep Jack from destroying a VERY beautiful room with lots of VERY beautiful (and I'm sure expensive) pieces of art work in it (nice job Paige), well... let's just say I'm wiped out!

I must give props to Wendy Deane at The Gallery in Valley http://www.wendydeaneartist.com/ for 1) allowing me to come and basically move in for the morning and 2) for trusting us not to destroy your place. LOL I think The Gallery gets more beautiful everytime I see it!

A quick sneak peek for R&T, the coolest parents on the block, just so you can breathe a sigh of relief. You know... I hear it from EVERY mom and dad about half way through the session, "Oh my, how do you do this? I'm just stressing out!" But I know it's there, it's always there, it just takes 1/200 of a second of everyone looking and smiling to get "the one". Good thing I have a fast trigger finger, because this crew had me hoppin'!

Quite possibly one of my FAVORITE sibling portraits EVER! I just LOVE the joyfulness on their faces!

This little GQ dude is only 2. Can you believe it? I think he has an old soul. He looks like he has been studying the Ralph Lauren catalogs.

Dashing good looks AND an all around cool kid, if only all kids could have him for a big brother, the world would be a happier place.

I used to be one of those mom's that took my camera every where my kids went. The park, the ballgames, playing in the yard, etc. Then somewhere along the way my camera grew up, it was big and heavy, and considering the fact that it was now a business asset and not "just a camera", the risk of having something happen to it on vacation or the trip to the zoo was just too great and I stopped taking those weekly snapshots of my kids. In my mind I thought, "instead of being busy capturing the moment, I'll be busy living in the moment, and burning it to my memory." But I knew that was just a way to make myself not feel bad for not even taking a camera on our last summer vacation.

So my wonderful husband surprised me on my birthday this year with a little teeny, tiny point and shoot camera. That's right folks, I've come full circle! This little thing can fit in my purse, hangs freely around my wrist without too much concern about what it bumps into. And you know what? I actually USE IT! I've taken pictures of my kids at their softball games, their last track and field day, the day Jack and I went to the zoo with our friends (hi Kate!). I'll admit, it was at first hard to get over the fact that every picture I take isn't some wonderful masterpiece of a portrait. But then I look at this one.

I could list off 18 "technical errors" in this image. It certainly won't win any awards, my photographic peers (who are some of my best friends, actually) wouldn't give it a second look and really doesn't even tell a story to the general viewer. But what it says to the mom that took it, is really all that matters.

Every Friday during the school year is deemed "Jack and Mom" day around here. Since Jack doesn't go to daycare on Fridays, I am placed with the weekly task of figuring out what to do with our time that doesn't involve sitting Jack in front of Caillou and Word World for hours on end. (PBS shows for those of you that don't live with the under 4 crowd) And unfortunately for me (and Jack) I'm not exactly that mom that takes my kids to weekly trips to the zoo (45 minute trip one way) or the Children's museum (I really dislike driving down town) or any number of wonderfully kid oriented, but "need to make a day trip out of it" adventures. You see I like to get our "adventure" out of the way before lunch and nap time, plus my attention span is that of a 3 year old too.

So every Friday morning for the past school year (give or take less than a handful I'm sure) Jack and I drop the girls off at school and head to Burger King for breakfast. We don't even bother with the play structure. Nope... we sit in the SAME booth and order the SAME cinni-mini's and "hashbrowns" (that's just a nice name for tator tots in the morning) and we just sit and eat and giggle and talk to people that pass us by, we chat with the workers, and wave at the people in the drive through (that's Jack's FAVORITE thing, he waves and then smiles as big as he can), we talk about the "big trucks" and the color of those "big trucks". Every now and then he'll see a motorcycle or a school bus and holler it out at the top of his lungs just to make sure everyone in the restaurant is also aware of the MOST AWESOME THING he just saw - I love that about him! Several times he's made "friends" with construction workers or grandpa types. Many times on our way out, as Jack is waving big and yelling "BYE!", he'll get a "see ya buddy!" right back.

So as you can see, this "technically terrible" snapshot holds a special place in my heart. It's of our last Burger King trip of the 2007-2008 school year. It reminds me of that 45 minutes we spend every week in "our booth" and how for $7.00 and change every week, I not only bought 2 orders of cinni-mini's and hashbrowns, but I got a year full of memories worth way more than the price of admission.

I am in need of 2 expecting mom models that will be willing to come to my studio for 2 sessions for a super cool (and top secret!) portrait project! The first session must be held between 30-34 weeks and the second session within the baby's first 10 days of life. Both of these sessions will be complimentary and you will receive one composite storyboard from your sessions and "with collection" pricing on anything else you choose to order.

Here are a few "rules" for the complimentary session.
* You must be comfortable with dressing in maternity wraps (see my home page slideshow for an example)
* You must sign a model release for both yourself and your new baby and be comfortable with these images being featured on my website, blog and other advertising avenues. (your names will not be associated with the images for privacy reasons)
* The sessions will be booked on a weekday morning or Tuesday evenings only
* The first session must take place before June 12, 2008

I'd like to remind all you moms and dads out there that April is not too early to apply the SPF sunscreen to the little ones.

We spent all day Saturday at Grandpa's cabin and now Jack and I are both suffering from lack of sunscreen this weekend. Sunburned babies are no fun. And my face hurts.

On a happy note - isn't it nice to have to finally worry about it! I love warm weather!

He came back for more! Well... we just didn't think we had enough variety from his session last week so he came back to try again. He was much happier this time and that makes me happy too! And if you can tear your eyes away from his amazing baby face, check out that chubba bubba belly. I wanted to zerbert him, but... I refrained.

Their wonderful friends and family have organized a fundraising dinner and silent auction for them on Friday April 25, 2008. I am posting some details below, I'm sure it will be a great event and I hope anyone that can attend will do so. I know I will be there!

Here is a little tidbit taken from the flyer for the fundraiser:
About the Family:
The Miller Family is suffering the loss of their son Nathaniel. Nathaniel was only 15 months old when he flew up to heaven. Nathaniel’s sisters Emma-7 and Isabel-3 are also having a hard time missing their only brother. Nathaniel was in and out of Children’s Hospital during his 15 months. He was born with congenital heart defect, Atrial Ventricular Septal Defect and with anomalies with his ribs and spine. However, you would never know it. He was a happy, lovable little boy. You can watch his video on his website ~ Sneakydave.com/themillers Nathaniel taught all of us here on earth how to live and love more deeply! Parents Jeff & Shelli Miller have also struggled for the last five years with their daughter Emma who was diagnosed with Cancer & OMS in 2002. Emma is doing better but still struggles with being sick a lot. The Millers have showed so many of us how to stay together as a family and how to keep strong. At this time, I invite everyone to join in giving to the Millers in some way ~ to say thank you for sharing your family with all of us and for showing us the strength of your faith in family, friends and in God. We will have a few items (one session + 16x20 and one session + 11x14) on the auction block to help raise money for the family. But I just didn't think that was enough! So in addition to the auction items we will be doing a special limited time event for the Miller family.

For every paid session fee for sessions booked from May 1 - June 30, 2008 we will donate $35 of the session fee directly to the Miller family.

And for every paid session fee for sessions booked in Sept 2008, we will donate $35 of the session fee to Children's Hospital for toys, arts, crafts and games in honor of Nate Miller's birthday.

I hope to see lots and lots of people at the fundraiser, but if you can't make it, know that you can still make a difference by teaming up with us in May, June and Sept!

We started offering framing in mid February and it has been very well received so far! I keep forgetting to take pictures of the framed portraits before they go out, but today I finally remembered.

Currently we are only offering two different frame choices - black or white - but I'm sure we will soon take on a few more options. And just like our wonderfully popular Canvas Wall Art pieces, framing allows you to purchase a "ready to hang" item. And how nice is it to be able to just pull your finished personal artwork out of your bag when you get home and hang it right on the wall! As always I am here to help you find what you need, so don't hesitate to ask for something specific. I'll do my best to find it for you!

Custom matting is also available - you just have ask for it! The sky is the limit on matting color and size choices, if you want it, I'll do my best to find it for you!

Here's baby H. coming to celebrate her 4 month birthday and to capture all the milestones she's reached so far! This bundle of sweetness can hold her head up so nicely and what a SMILE! And hardly a peep out of her the whole time. What a nice little baby she is!

And a little nod to mom... having you here is like spending an hour with an old friend. Thank you so much for "getting me". Time flies way too fast when you guys are around!
